What could ten quiet minutes reveal about your work fit?
The Question
If time froze this ordinary Tuesday, what would your life say about what truly mattered to you?
I recently read an article about the excavation of Pompeii – the city that was covered under layers of volcanic ash when Mount Vesuvius erupted. Centuries later, archaeologists uncovered more than just buildings and monuments.
They found evidence of ordinary life.
Homes. Shops. Kitchens. Tools. Food. Furniture. Everyday objects that people used.
They found people frozen in time doing things that gave details about how they lived, worked and played.
Some were found eating. Some were praying. Some were holding people they loved.
I don’t think the people of Pompeii ever imagined their normal everyday routines would be preserved for centuries and would tell stories about their lives.
What I noticed.
As I thought about the article - I started thinking about the women I serve and work with.
Women who have built careers and work lives that made perfect sense at one point but somehow, somewhere along the way, something changed.
What once seemed right, no longer fit quite as well anymore. Or maybe it never really fit them at all – they just felt it was what they were “supposed” to do. Their work felt draining, their priorities had changed.
They wanted something that felt right for them; not trying to please everyone else. They wanted more room for their lives.
They were ready for something different. They didn't want to spend another ordinary day doing work that no longer fit.
And yet, most of them kept waiting for the “right time” to figure it out because they didn’t know where to get started or felt they didn’t have all the answers.
What they didn’t understand was that they didn’t need to blow up their lives to start making a change.
They didn’t know that change didn’t have to come as a big leap.
As a matter of fact – change can start with something as little as just paying attention. Noticing what gives you energy throughout your day. Considering ideas you've been dismissing because it's not the “right time” or you couldn’t see how to make it happen.
You don’t need to know exactly where you are going or have a five-year plan. You just need to take some small steps – that may lead to the changes and life you want.
What I'd ask you.
What would someone discover if they uncovered your life - in the middle of an ordinary day?
They might find you scrolling through your phone, making dinner, or driving kids somewhere.
Taking care of everyone else…doing what others want or need.
Would they find you doing work that was a fit for you and your life? If the answer is "no" - you can do something about it.
You have choices about how you spend your time — and you can start making changes without knowing exactly where they will lead.
Take ten quiet minutes today. No filters, no "shoulds." Write down the answer to these two questions:
1. What story is your “every day” telling right now?
2. What do you want to be found doing on an ordinary “Tuesday”?
If you think of more questions than answers, that's okay — that's the exercise working and that’s where useful career conversations can begin.
What you discover may be more insightful and give you more clarity than any career assessment, because there's no “should” or "correct" answer.
What you find in the middle of your ordinary day could be the beginning of designing a work fit that’s right for you, the life you have and the one you want for the future.
